According to the “Notice from the Degree Committee of the State Council on the Release of the List of Approved Doctorate and Master's Degree Granting Institutions and Its Degree Authorization Points for the Year 2020”, Zunyi Medical University has been approved as a doctorate degree-granting institution. The school's clinical medicine has been granted the authorization point for professional doctorate degrees. From the date of approval, it may carry out doctoral graduate training. Zunyi Medical University has become the first doctorate degree-granting institution in a non-provincial capital city in Guizhou province, effectively filling the gap in regional doctoral graduate education in Guizhou province.

As the first undergraduate medical school founded by the Chinese Communist Party after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Zunyi Medical University is deeply rooted in the red soil, working diligently and forging ahead. The school is a university co-built by the National Health Commission and the People's Government of Guizhou province. It is also part of the national 'Foundation Capability Building Project for Universities in Central and Western China', a pilot university for the national first batch of 'Excellent Doctor Education Training Plan', and a pilot university for the reform of the national first batch of clinical medicine master's professional degree graduate education. It has four national key clinical specialties. In 2018, it was renamed Zunyi Medical University and has supplied the nation with nearly 80,000 outstanding medical talents.

The school's Clinical Medicine program is the first medical discipline in Guizhou province to enter the top 1% of the global ESI rankings. It is a national first-class specialty, with professional certification valid for 7 years, which is the highest exemption period obtained for medical specialties in the province. In 2018, it won Guizhou province's first national teaching achievement award in the medical field. In the 2021 Soft Science China Best Subject Ranking, it ranked 50th nationally.
