Congratulations to Professor He Zhixu's Team on Winning the Top 10 Scientific and Technological Innovation Achievements of Guizhou Province in 2022 for Their Stem Cell Research!

On the afternoon of February 23rd, the results of the 2022 Top 10 Scientific and Technological Innovation Achievements in Guizhou Province were announced. Among the top 10 achievements, there are 1 achievement oriented towards the forefront of world science and technology, 4 achievements oriented towards the main economic field, 3 achievements oriented towards major national demands, and 2 achievements oriented towards people's life and health. The findings of Professor He Zhixu's team, "Research on the Application of Mesenchyme Stem Cells and the Result Transformation and Utilization" ,have won the Top 10 Scientific and Technological Innovation Achievements of Guizhou Province in 2022-‘Achievements oriented towards People's Life and Health’.

Stem cells, also known as "the seeds of life," are a group of cells with the potential of self-renewal, high proliferation, and multi-directional differentiation, which are important foundations for achieving tissue regeneration and organ function recovery. Stem cell technology is an important breakthrough in life science in the 21st century, promoting clinical medicine into the era of "regenerative medicine". Professor He Zhixu led his team to aim at the international forefront and carry out the “Research Project on the Application of Mesenchyme Stem Cells and the Result Transformation and Utilization", achieving significant technological innovation results, and bringing stem cell research in Guizhou Province to the advanced level in China. As for the research results in the earlier stages in China, mesenchyme stem cells could be discovered, successfully separated and obtained from perinatal tissues such as the umbilical cord, placenta, and amniotic membrane. Also, research on the technology of large-scale separation, preparation, and storage has been carried out and mesenchyme stem cells have been used for the treatment of a series of clinical diseases and for tissue engineering product development. At the same time, the successful combination of stem cell technology and tumor therapy has contributed to some new practices such as treating leukemia by resorting to mesenchyme stem cells with oncolytic virus. The wide range of the technology transformation and application has greatly promoted the development of bio-pharmaceutical technology and the industry in Guizhou Province with innovative significance.

He Zhixu, who has done his master degree and doctor degree in West China University of Medical Science and has finished his postdoctoral study in Sun Yat-sen Medical University, now has the following titles:the second-grade professor, the chief physician, the doctoral supervisor, and the core expert of Guizhou Province. He has presided over key international cooperation projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the New Century Talent Support Program of the Ministry of Education, the project of National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 10 odd provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects. In addition, he has made significant breakthroughs in the field of basic research on stem cell applications, establishing China's first human embryonic stem cell line and making China the fifth country in the world to master this technology; for the first time in the world, he successfully developed embryonic stem cell lines derived from "human cells and mammalian oocytes cloning", making major breakthroughs in developmental biology and therapeutic cloning technology and obtaining two international patents; for the first time globally he managed to develop anti-myeloma vaccines by using dendritic cells derived from embryonic stem cells, opening up a new path for the "industrialized" preparation of tumor vaccines; for the first time internationally he discovered the new pharmacological effect of low-dose aspirin on antioxidant activity. The above research has filled the gap in the disciplinary fields at home and abroad, reaching international advanced levels. Since 2003, he has won two first prizes and two second prizes for Scientific and Technological Progress Award in Guizhou Province, and has also won many academic honors such as the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Innovation Award and the Fifth Chinese Pediatrician Award.
